Since we will probably turn 65 during the year 2016, this seems like an appropriate time to mention MEDICARE.
One concept for the reunion was to have an expert come and explain to us How to Enroll. Then we discovered that
we are supposed to sign up 3 months PRIOR to our birthday month. For some of us, whose birthdays are early in
the year, that means we should sign up for Medicare during 2015 , . . and well before the reunion !!!
The purpose of the MEDICARE REUNION is less about Medicare and more about having another great party. Instead of calling it the 47th Annual,
we decided it go with the name Medicare because this is the year we hit the age to become eligible.
Much of what we need to know about enrolling in Medicare can be found online.
Just to provide a very simple explanation, here are the Basics:
What is Medicare?
Medicare is the federal health insurance program for people who are 65 or older, certain younger people with disabilities, and people with End-Stage Renal Disease (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a transplant, sometimes called ESRD).
The different parts of Medicare help cover specific services:
Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance)
covers inpatient hospital stays, care in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care, and some home health care.
Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance)
covers certain doctors' services, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services.
Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage Plans)
A Medicare Advantage Plan is a type of Medicare health plan offered by a private company that contracts with Medicare to provide you with all your Part A and Part B benefits. Medicare Advantage Plans include Health Maintenance Organizations, Preferred Provider Organizations, Private Fee-for-Service Plans, Special Needs Plans, and Medicare Medical Savings Account Plans. If you're enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan, Medicare services are covered through the plan and aren't paid for under Original Medicare. Most Medicare Advantage Plans offer prescription drug coverage.
Medicare Part D (prescription drug coverage)
Part D adds prescription drug coverage to Original Medicare, some Medicare Cost Plans, some Medicare Private-Fee-for-Service Plans, and Medicare Medical Savings Account Plans. These plans are offered by insurance companies and other private companies approved by Medicare. Medicare Advantage Plans may also offer prescription drug coverage that follows the same rules as Medicare Prescription Drug Plans.
The government would prefer that you enroll online rather than in person at a Social Security Office. Here are Their Reasons to Enroll Online:
You should sign up for Medicare three months before reaching age 65, even if you plan to delay receiving retirement benefits because you are working. Otherwise, your Medicare medical insurance, as well as prescription drug coverage, could be delayed, and you could be charged higher premiums.
You can sign up for Medicare even if you are not ready to start receiving retirement benefits. You can opt out of receiving cash retirement benefits now once you are in the online application. Then you can apply online for retirement benefits later.
Some people trust the federal government implicitly. Others are more suspicious. These issues are political and 69wildcats.com really tries to avoid politics.
The main point is that we become eligible to enroll in Medicare during this next year and if we delay, we might lose benefits. How you enroll and what choices you make
are way beyond the scope of this web page. Suffice it to say that timing is important and so are the options for enrollment.
For now, the concept is to have the 2016 reunion somewhere near the last one because that allows convenient access by a large number of classmates who live within driving distance. The plan is to have a
smaller venue with fewer amenities to reduce the cost. It might well be characterized as BYOB. It might be somewhat like a Garden Party. The main attraction will be the terrific group of
classmates who live nearby and some of the same talented musicians and performers to provide entertainment.
Live Music will be provided by Classmates
Since we know there are other talented musicians from our class, they (You) are encouraged to participate in certain songs.
